The Yankees returned to earth after an incredible prior week Aaron Boone’s club began the six-day stretch on the road in Cleveland losing two-of-three games, then rebounded nicely by taking the series via a Sunday double-header sweep at home against the Toronto Blue Jays. Even after a .500 week, the Yanks still sit atop the AL East at 17-11 (.607), 2 games ahead of the Boston Red Sox.
Weaver Replaces Williams as Closer
In reality, the Yankees should have swept the Jays. The stage was set for a victory, following a brilliant start by Carlos Carrasco. Boone turned to former closer Devin Williams to close out Toronto. The Jays had other plans as Williams permitted three runs, blowing the save without recording a single out. Boone and the Yankees finally have seen enough and named Luke Weaver the closer until further notice in an interview on Saturday.
Max. Fried.
Fried is a bonna-fide Ace. We just might be witnessing what could be a CY Young season for the southpaw. It didn’t matter that he didn’t have his best stuff in Game 1 of Sunday’s doubleheader – Fried still turned in another quality start, grinding through six innings of work and allowed just one lone run. He is now 5-0 with an astonishing 1.43 ERA
Fundamentals
The Yankees are still not a fundamentally sound team. Boone and the coaching staff need to correct both the physical and mental errors that seem to occur on a nightly basis. The biggest area of improvement is needed on the basepaths and in the field. Most noticeably Oswaldo Cabrera and Jazz Chisholm to be more specific.
On The Mend
Jonathan Loaisiga and DJ LeMahieu have commenced their rehab assignments and have looked very good thus far. Giancarlo Stanton began swinging a bat last week, and Luis Gil has started his throwing program. This is great news for the Yankees, all would be welcome additions on a roster that is still figuring it out.
Player of the Week: Aaron Judge
The amazing thing about Aaron Judge is that he has won two MVPs, and he keeps getting better. Judge somehow found a way to further improve his 2025 batting average (.406) and OPS (1.217) this past week. We really need to take a step back and really appreciate the greatness we are so fortunate to witness on a nightly basis. In a world where “generational talent” is thrown out way too much, those are the only true words that can describe our captain.
What’s Next?
The Yankees look to return to their winning ways this upcoming week, which holds another six-game slate for The Bronx Bombers. The Yankees face the Orioles in Baltimore for three games, then return home to host Tampa Bay over the weekend. The Yankees scheduled day off is Thursday. All weekdays are night games, with afternoon baseball scheduled for Saturday and Sunday.
