The New York Yankees started the 2025 season off with a bang! Well, actually, a league-leading 15 of them. The Bronx Bombers lived up to their name, outscoring the visiting Milwaukee Brewers 36 to 14 in their three-game opening weekend sweep. Yes, it’s only three games but the team’s OPS is an eye-popping, Major League leading, 1.231. Here is a full recap of the past week with some fun stats.
Game 1 – Thursday, March 27: Brewers 2 at Yankees 4
2025 Season Record: 1-0
Win: Carlos Rodon (1-0)
Loss: Freddy Peralta
Save: Devin Williams (1)
- En route to their fourth-consecutive Opening Day victory, Austin Wells, made history by becoming the first New York Yankees catcher to lead off for the organization in its 123rd season.
- The 25-year-old former first round pick also made MLB history as he crushed a 2-0 fastball in the bottom of the first inning off Brewers starter Freddy Peralta for a homer over the Yankee Stadium short porch in right. That marked the first time in league history that a catcher has ever led off with a homer on Opening Day.
- Furthermore, Wells’ solo-shot also made him the first ever Yankee leadoff hitter to go deep on Opening Day in franchise history.
Game 2 – Saturday, March 29: Brewers 9 at Yankees 20
2025 Season Record: 2-0
Win: Yoendrys Gomez (1-0)
Loss: Nestor Cortes (0-1)
- The Yankees started the game offensively by taking the first three Nestor Cortes pitches deep, homering back-to-back-to-back. That marked the first time that has ever happened in a Major League Baseball game.
- Paul Goldschmidt, Cody Bellinger, and Aaron Judge also made franchise history by becoming the first trio of hitters to ever led off a game with three consecutive homers.
- They also were the first players to homer on three consecutive pitches in an MLB game since Brett Gardner, DJ LeMahieu, and Luke Voit did against the Blue Jays in the 2020 season for the Yankees.
- The Yankees hit 9 homers in the contest, marking a club-record. The team unfortunately fell short of tying the MLB record by 1 homer.
- The 13 homers slugged, tied them for the most in a 2-game span in franchise history.
Game 3 – Sunday, March 30: Brewers 3 at Yankees 12
2025 Season Record: 3-0
Win: Tim Hill (1-0)
Loss: Aaron Civale (0-1)
- The Yankees home run barrage continued as the team added four more home runs to their series/season total, tying the MLB record for homers in the first three games of the season in league history.
The Good: This season could not have started off any better for the Yankees, at least offensively. This opening series was one for the record books. Judge looks like his MVP-self, while Jazz Chisholm and Cody Bellinger in particular, sure look poised to have a huge 2025 as well.
The Bad: The Yankees committed five errors in Saturday’s contest. PFP’s continue to be an issue and Jasson Dominguez has looked very unsure of himself in left thus far. Keep an eye out on third base, that certainly looks like a huge area in need of an upgrade hopefully before the trade deadline.
Player of the Week: Aaron Judge. 6-11, 4 HR, 11 RBI, 4 BB, .545/.643/2.461
