Yankees Showing Urgency With Call-Ups Within The System In 2026
The Major League Baseball season is a marathon, not a sprint. That’s a common phrase you hear when teams go through their inevitable struggles during the course of 162 games. This year, the New York Yankees are off to a hot start (26-13). That hot start would normally allow a team to be more patient when it comes to making significant moves, but this year has been different in the Bronx.
No, it is not Brian Cashman pushing the panic button, but rather the Yankees have something they have not on their roster in quite some time. That is….options.
No, we are not necessarily talking about minor league options, but if the Yankees have something in the minors or on their 26-man roster, they won’t be afraid to push that button. Let’s look at some examples.
When Luis Gil was struggling, the Yankees decided to send him down to Triple-A Scranton Wilkes-Barre and call up a top prospect in Elmer Rodriguez. When Ryan McMahon had his early struggles at the plate, New York went with Amed Rosario while he had the hot hand.. Even when Anthony Volpe was ready to come up and resume the shortstop role, the Yankees elected to keep going with Jose Caballero at the big league level.
The latest example came on Thursday afternoon when the Yankees reportedly called up Spencer Jones after Jasson Dominguez went on the injured list due to an AC Joint sprain in his left shoulder. Jones is being rewarded for his solid play at Scranton (.258/..366/.592, 11 HR, 41 RBIs, .958 OPS) and could give the Yankees more offense in the outfield while Dominguez and Giancarlo Stanton are on the injured list.
Whether Jones succeeds or fails, it tells you the Yankees are not playing around this season. On the latest episode of the New York, New York podcast, Cashman was on with John Jastremski and he talked about how the Yankees have more options to make decisions this year compared to past seasons, but that doesn’t mean there’s more urgency.
“That’s a false narrative. The urgency is always there. We are just deeper right now with our choices. Last year, Dominguez was the everyday left fielder, Grisham took it from him. Last year, in theory, Grisham was Caballero this year…Two years ago, it was Luke Weaver who was supposed to be a long man/spot starter. Next thing you know he emerges as a reliever and in 2024, he becomes our closer. That was not on our bingo card. “
“We just adjust to the ebbs and flows of our season. The urgency is always there. Last year’s team was hungry. Last year’s team was determined and very talented. Our interest level is to find ways to be the best we can possibly be. It’s a very difficult sport. If we are sloppy in one category, we are going to do everything we can to try to address it. Some of the moves we are making this year are more of a manifestation that we have alternative choices moreso that are obvious than we have had the last few years, but the urgency is no different.”
Going off those quotes, there’s no reason to doubt on the field that the Yankees show the same urgency and try to win on a daily basis. With that being said, it took the Yankees a while last year to put Jazz Chisholm Jr. at second base and to take Devin Williams out of the closer role. That’s not to say it cost the team an AL East title and an easier playoff road, but they did lose the AL East via a tiebreaker.
One game can make all the difference sometimes and it did last year. The Yankees depth at the big league level and at Triple-A to make impact moves. New York could have easily gone with someone like Seth Brown to take Dominguez’s spot because of the major league experience he has, but they elected to give Jones an opportunity because of the potential he has.
Making a move like Jones not only can bring excitement and positive momentum to a clubhouse, but it brings excitement to the fans as well. It may be unfair, but fans see this year so far as hey, the Yankees are trying to win every game. They are making moves the way some of us might as armchair GM.
Cashman doesn’t have to agree with the fans because fans aren’t always right. However, the impact moves and quick moves early in the year suggest the Yankees are going for it and they feel they have the weapons internally to have a successful 2026 season.
